Roger Ebert's in the hospital for more cancer surgery. Best wishes to him.

I happen to disagree with his review of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. I think he just missed the boat on this one. This film has a lot of depth and, for a comedy, is poignantly sad on some levels. I enjoyed it very much, and left the theatre thinking about obsession as a career component, one of the film's themes.

How much of one's personal life should one sacrifice to one's career? That rang a chord for me. I've made some commitments to my writing, such as writing every single day and setting other goals for myself, that take bites out of my time and energy for home and family. I'm lucky to have an understanding and supportive spouse.

Anyway, I recommend the film. Meryl Streep is sublime and also sad. Stanley Tucci brings depth to the sidekick role, and Anne Hathaway may well be the next Julia Roberts.

Two pages on this holiday weekend.
